  • Abstract:

This study explored what standards American Executives of multinational enterprise architectural, engineering, and construction firms use in successful infrastructure development in developing countries, emphasizing Sub-Saharan Africa. The problem investigated in the study was that Sub-Saharan Africa ranks at the bottom of global infrastructure supply because how multinational enterprise architectural, engineering, and construction firms could help developing countries develop successful infrastructure has not been established and standardized. The investigation was undertaken with a qualitative phenomenological approach to extract participating organizations’ lived experiences to explain the phenomenon. The General Systems Theory provided the conceptual framework between infrastructure executives, management, and construction and infrastructure sectors in addressing the standards of successful infrastructure delivery. The analysis of interview transcripts of ten infrastructure executives produced some significant themes relevant to the inquiry. The findings show that standards of excellence interact at (a) project delivery within time, cost, and quality; (b) policies guiding organizational and client relationships; (c) effective team training program; (d) leadership and managerial capabilities in the field operations; and (e) stronger local law enforcement of contractual obligations. The findings are consistent with General Systems Theory as sub-systems of organizations interact with each other, seeking equilibrium to survive in the external macro-environment represented by diverse stakeholders.
